Football fans, the wait is over. While the college football season technically kicked off last weekend with Week 0, the real action begins this Thursday.
With nearly 100 games involving FBS teams scheduled between now and Monday night, Week 1 promises to deliver plenty of excitement. Although some matchups might not be the dream clashes fans have been eagerly anticipating, there are still several high-stakes games that are sure to grab your attention. Here’s a rundown of the best Week 1 college football games you won’t want to miss.
Colorado vs. North Dakota State (Thursday, 8 p.m. ET on ESPN)
The Deion Sanders era in Boulder enters its second year with a challenging opener against North Dakota State, one of the most formidable programs in the FCS. The Bison, ranked No. 2 in the FCS coaches poll, have a history of toppling FBS teams, including notable victories over programs like Kansas State and Iowa.
Colorado, after a tumultuous 2023 season that saw them finish 4-8, is looking to make a statement. With star quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way sensation Travis Hunter leading the charge, the Buffaloes are hoping to start the season on a high note, but the battle-hardened Bison won’t make it easy.
No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 14 Clemson (Saturday, Noon ET on ABC)
In what might be the most anticipated game of the weekend, Georgia and Clemson square off in Atlanta. Both programs are looking to bounce back from underwhelming finishes last season. Georgia, despite being the top-ranked team, is eager to prove its dominance after missing the playoff last year. Clemson, on the other hand, is hoping to return to its former glory after a disappointing 9-4 campaign. This early-season clash between two college football powerhouses is sure to set the tone for the rest of the year.
No. 19 Miami at Florida (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC)
The Sunshine State showdown between Miami and Florida is another must-watch. Both programs are under pressure to deliver after disappointing seasons. Miami’s head coach, Mario Cristobal, has brought in former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward, who is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the Hurricanes’ offense.
Florida, however, faces a brutal schedule and will be eager to start the season strong, especially after a challenging 5-7 finish last year. This game could be a turning point for either program.
No. 7 Notre Dame at No. 20 Texas A&M (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC)
Notre Dame heads to Kyle Field to take on Texas A&M in a matchup that could have playoff implications down the line. The Irish, led by head coach Marcus Freeman, are eyeing a spot in the expanded 12-team playoff and know that a win against a strong SEC opponent would be a huge boost to their resume.
Texas A&M, coming off a rollercoaster of a season, will look to make a statement at home and prove that they belong in the national conversation.
No. 13 LSU vs. No. 23 USC (Sunday, 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC)
Rounding out the weekend, LSU and USC face off in Las Vegas. USC, despite having last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, struggled mightily on defense last season.
The Trojans have brought in D’Anton Lynn as the new defensive coordinator, hoping he can turn things around. LSU, known for its high-powered offense, will test the revamped USC defense in what promises to be an explosive matchup. This game will be a crucial early test for both teams and could set the stage for their respective seasons.
Boston College at No. 10 Florida State (Monday, 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN)
Florida State will be looking to bounce back after a shocking loss to Georgia Tech in Ireland. Now back on home turf, the Seminoles will face Boston College in a game they can’t afford to lose.
A second consecutive loss to start the season would be disastrous for a team with high expectations. This Monday night matchup will be an opportunity for Florida State to steady the ship and show that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the ACC.
Week 1 is packed with thrilling college football matchups that are sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats. From powerhouse showdowns to rivalry games with playoff implications, this weekend is just the beginning of what promises to be an unforgettable season.
